A Balanced Life Wellness Herb Shop

Hi my name is Betsy Miller and I am an herbalist and I welcome you to my shop.

Hello everyone! My name is Betsy, and I’m a medical herbalist and licensed nutritionist in Northern Virginia. All of my herbal products are handmade with love and care, and are based on formulas that I designed to help clients, loved ones and myself with various health concerns.

A Little About Me……

My Background

Besty MillerI have always been drawn to the healing arts and the natural world.  To learn more about the planet and the role I could play in her future, I attended the University of Vermont and completed my undergraduate studies in Environmental Science and Ecological Agriculture.  During this time I also completed my 200 hour training in Vajra yoga, and taught for several years in the Burlington area.  While in school I spent a semester abroad in India, furthering my study of yoga and receiving an introduction to Ayurvedic healing.  I received my Masters Degree in medical herbalism from the Maryland University of Integrative Health in Laurel, Maryland, and am now practicing as a clinical herbalist and licensed nutritionist in Northern Virginia.

My Philosophy

Each one of us is uniquely whole and complete as we are in this moment, and within that wholeness we each have room for growth, change and evolution.  By integrating herbal medicines, nutritional counseling and lifestyle coaching, we can move together along the spectrum of wellness towards a new and positive state of mind, body and spirit.  My role as a healer is to help my clients find and cultivate their natural state of optimal health; I am here to provide my clients with the tools that will empower them to take charge of their own wellness and move from health-care to self-care.

Coffee Bitters – Award Winning

These amazing bitters just won an award at the 2016 American Herbalist Guild Symposium for the most innovative new product! Combining the flavors of dark coffee, burdock root and dandelion root, with a hint of maple and gentian, they taste like a whole cup of rich, fresh-brewed coffee in just a few drops.

Bitters are traditionally used by herbalists to improve digestive function; when we take them before meals, we enhance the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste products. A bit about the herbs in this blend:

Coffee: before we add all the cream and sugar (or in my case maple syrup!) to our morning coffee, the brewed beans are actually quite bitter. In fact, black coffee is probably the most bitter thing most Americans get in their diet on a daily basis. Herbalist Jim McDonald once said that the overabundance of sweet cravings in our culture is likely a crying-out for the taste of bitter, which has largely been eradicated by our diets. Using coffee as a bitter in this blend can help integrate this important taste back into our daily routine with a flavor that many of us associate with comfort.

Burdock: burdock is one of my most beloved plants. This seemingly gentle root is a reminder that just because something is gentle, doesn’t mean it’s not powerful. Burdock has the amazing ability to help remind our digestive system what it means to be well; when we consume burdock on a daily basis, its alterative properties help to clean away the by-products of metabolic waste and assist our body in absorbing more nutrition from our food so that we feel and function at our highest level.

Dandelion: dandelion is another amazing herb for the digestive system. Its root is a gentle choleretic and cholagogue, helping to stimulate the production and flow of bile so that we can break down and absorb digested fats more effectively.

Gentian: on the spectrum of bitters energetics, gentian is cold! It is a true bitter root, powerfully stimulating our digestive capacity and nudging our body back towards normal digestive secretions and peristaltic activity. Gentian is great for those of us who find it challenging to digest heavier foods, especially fats and proteins.
